The Minister of Communications and Information Technology Amr Talaat has participated in the Mobile World Congress (MWC) 2023, organized by the Global System for Mobile Communications Association (GSMA), in Barcelona, Spain.
During his participation in MWC, the ICT Minister held a meeting with Senior Vice President and Head of Market Area Middle East and Africa at Ericsson Fadi Pharaon and various officials from the company. They discussed expanding Ericsson’s business in the fields of exporting digital services from Egypt and enhancing cooperation in digital capacity-building.
The meeting highlighted Digital Egypt strategy and Egypt’s efforts to improve the quality of telecommunication and Internet services nationwide, and reviewed the most prominent achievements to develop the information infrastructure in the Egyptian villages targeted within Decent Life initiative.
Ericsson officials showcased the company’s latest products, services, and solutions, as well as its vision and future plans in Egypt. They discussed enhancing cooperation to leverage the company’s technologies and solutions in terms of facing climate change and enhancing cooperation in digital capacity-building, in line with Digital Egypt strategy.
Furthermore, opportunities for expanding Ericsson’s business in outsourcing and exporting digital services through Ericsson’s different global delivery centers in Egypt were also discussed.
The meeting was attended by Telecom Egypt CEO and Managing Director Adel Hamed. From Ericsson’s side, Head of Government and Policy Advocacy Andrew Lloyd, Vice President and Head of Customer Unit STC in Saudi Arabia and Egypt Håkan Cervell, and Head of Government and Industry Relations in the Middle East and Africa Ali Cheema also attended the meeting.
Talaat also met with Nokia phone maker “HMD Global” Co-Founder, Chairman and CEO Jean-Francois Baril, and several officials from the company. They delved into Nokia’s plans to expand the volume of its business in Egypt in manufacturing and exporting mobile phones. They also addressed the facilities that Egypt provides to attract companies operating in electronics manufacturing and design to invest and expand their business in Egypt.
From Nokia’s side, the meeting was attended by HMD Global Chief Operation Officer Alain Lejeune, Vice President for HMD Global in the Middle East, North Africa (MENA) and India Sanmeet Kochhar, and General Manager of HMD in Egypt and Sudan Tamer El-Gamal.
In a similar vein, the ICT Minister met with Senior Vice President and Chief Customer Officer for Infrastructure Solutions Group (ISG) at Lenovo Wilfredo Sotolongo, and General Manager for ISG at Lenovo in the Middle East and Africa Alaa Bawab. They discussed establishing an engineering design hub for the company at the Knowledge City in the New Administrative Capital.
The meeting highlighted that the Ministry of Communications and Information Technology (MCIT) established an electronics industry hub in Egypt, at the Knowledge City in the New Administrative Capital. The hub hosts companies specialized in electronics design and specialized laboratories, and serves as a center for research, development (R&D), and innovation.
Furthermore, Talaat met with CEO of Detecon International Ralf Pichler. As an independent company within the Deutsche Telekom Group, Detecon is the world’s leading corporate specialized in management and technology consultancies.
During the meeting, Detecon officials presented the company’s vision on best practices and business models to develop the telecommunications industry. They also presented Deutsche Telekom’s experience in installing fiber-optic cables.
The ICT Minister showcased the efforts made to establish CREATIVA Innovation Hubs nationwide to develop digital calibers in ICT and support technological innovation and entrepreneurship.
The meeting was attended by Telecom Egypt CEO and Managing Director Adel Hamed. From Detecon’s side, Managing Partner and Global Chapter Head Communication Industries International Falk Schröder, Managing Partner in the Middle East and Africa Björn Minden, and Technology Transformation Partner and Director of Detecon’s Cairo office Amir Abdelazim attended the meeting.
The meetings were attended by Acting CEO of the Information Technology Industry Development Agency (ITIDA) Ahmed Elzaher, Assistant ICT Minister for Strategy and Implementation Sherine El-Guindy, Assistant ICT Minister for Global Information Infrastructure (GII) Mohamed Nasr Eldin, and Advisor to ICT Minister for Technology Innovation, Electronics Industry and Training Hossam Osman.
Furthermore, the ICT Minister attended a session on future vision in light of the advantages that advanced mobile phone networks provide. The session delved into the new horizons of digital innovation, Artificial Intelligence (AI), and Augmented Reality (AR), as well as their impact on developing and supporting transformation in all industries.
