During the meeting, the environment minister reviewed the first updated report on nationally-specific contributions, noting that this comes in the wake of a joint declarationduring the events of the COP27 climate summitbetween governments of Egypt, Germany and the United States to accelerate the energy transformation in Egypt. The joint announcement ensures submission of an updated version of national contributions by June 2023 includes an increase in renewable energy contribution to electricity generation to 42% by 2030 instead of 2035. the minister added. She explained that the joint announcement also included reducing reliance on natural gas in the electricity sector, starting the development of green hydrogen, studying the possibility of establishing and adopting an ambitious long-term strategy for 2050 to reach carbon neutrality targets, and assuring support for the energy axis in the Novi program. Dr. Yasmin Fouad presented the importance of the procedures taken on carbon emissions certification, noting that the output of the recent Sharm El-Sheikh climate summit included laying down operational rules to start implementation of Article Six of the Paris Agreement on carbon mechanisms, which was also announced as a part of the activation of the platform A number of measures have been taken.
