The Cairo International Center for Conflict Settlement, Peace Preservation and Peace Building hosted the signing ceremony of a new cooperation project between the Center and the Japanese government through the United Nations Development Program entitled “Confronting Emerging Threats to Development, Peace and Security in Africa” for a year beginning in April this year. The project document was signed by Ambassador Yasser Abed, Director of the Department for International Development Cooperation in the Ministry of Foreign Affairs, Ambassador Ahmed Nihad Abdel Latif, Director-General of the Cairo International Center, and Mr. Alessandro Fracasetti, the Resident Representative of the United Nations Development Program in Egypt, in the presence of Ambassador Oka Hiroshi, the Ambassador of Japan to Egypt. The project comes in the framework of a partnership between the Cairo International Center and Japan, in support of the Centre’s efforts to build the capacities of African states in the field of peace and security and strengthen the capacity of African communities to withstand the series of threats facing the African continent. Ambassador Ahmed Nihad Abdel-Latif, Director-General of the Cairo Center, expressed his appreciation for Japan’s support for the Centre’s activities, praised the extended cooperation between the two sides since 1945, based on the distinctive relations between the two countries in various spheres, and their keenness in supporting efforts for peace and stability in the African continent, he emphasized that the project from It will usher in a new phase of cohesion of efforts that will allow the Centre to implement diverse activities to address new and tangled risks in Africa, which require comprehensive approaches that will activate the interconnected relationship between peace, security, humanitarian dimension and development. Ambassador Yasser Abed stressed the keenness of the Egyptian Foreign Ministry to support cooperation between the Cairo Center and development partners, noting that the launch of this project reflects the growing role of the Cairo Center in terms of strength and pivotal role of partnerships in supporting its work, on the other hand. In turn, the Japanese ambassador praised the Cairo Center’s efforts in training and capacity building in the African continent as an extension of Egypt’s leading role in promoting international and regional peace and stability, and emphasized his country’s keenness in supporting security and development efforts in the continent within the framework of the implementation of the initiatives launched by Japan towards Africa at the Tokyo Conference International for African Development (Ticad) For his part, the resident representative of the UNDP praised the partnership between the Cairo Center and the programme, stressing that the cooperation project will contribute to empowering African countries to face the risks and threats that emerge without achieving sustainable peace and development.
