International Cooperation Minister Rania Al-Mashat reviews Egypt’s experience in issuing the CCDR Climate and Development Report and efforts to transform a regional centre for green hydrogen production As part of the series of events organized by the World Bank Group to discuss climate and development issues in the Middle East and North Africa region, during the Spring 2023 meetings in Washington, Dr. Rania Al-Mashat, Minister of International Cooperation and Governor of Egypt at the World Bank Group, participated in high-level meetings on “accelerating smart development, climate action and discussing lessons learned for countries.” In the Middle East and North Africa region of the CCDR Climate and Development Reports, so are the “requirements for the transformation of the region to a global centre for green hydrogen for development”. The two events were attended by Mr. Farid Belhaj, Vice President of the World Bank Group for the Middle East and North Africa Region, Mrs. Marina Weiss, Regional Director for Egypt, Yemen and Djibouti of the World Bank group, and many representatives of member states, ministers and governors from the region. In her speech, Dr. Rania Al-Mashat, Minister of International Cooperation, sought to share the Egyptian experience in preparing the Qatari Climate and Development Report CCDR in cooperation with the World Bank and national stakeholders in Egypt, which has been worked on for more than a year, to diagnose the situation of the Egyptian economy and challenges facing development and climate action efforts, It provides a comprehensive, detailed assessment of climate risks and outlines policy opportunities and options that lead the way forward to achieving climate action goals. The Climate and Development report includes (1) cost-effective adaptation methods and approaches to mitigate the adverse effects of climate change, (2) policy-level measures and intervention activities to improve the efficiency of natural resources, provision of additional public finance to fund projects that limit people and economies from the risk of climate shock, and (3) actions that Making changes at policy level while keeping in mind the associated cost cuts can help avoid restraint. The Minister of International Cooperation pointed out the launch of the National Platform for Green Projects, which takes into account the recommendations issued in the Climate and Development Report, aiming to accelerate the pace of transition to a green economy, through specific projects in the areas of water, food and energy, and working to crowd climate financing and investments that reflect interconnected interconnectedness Integration between climate action and development efforts strengthens Egyptian state efforts to transition from climate commitment phase to implementation phase, under the umbrella of the National Strategy for Climate Change 2050. Egypt had launched the Qatar Climate and Development Report CCDR in cooperation with the World Bank during the COP27 climate conference, as the first country in the Middle East and North Africa region. Regarding efforts to convert the region into a global hub for green hydrogen, the Minister of International Cooperation confirmed that Egypt is taking clear steps to become one of the leading countries in the green hydrogen industry for development, within its vision of expanding renewable energy and exporting it to neighboring countries, a sign that Egypt has great opportunities to take advantage of this Renewed supplier reflecting on its domestic production, generating jobs and boosting value chain by manufacturing green hydrogen products and derivatives. The Minister of International Cooperation reviewed the agreements signed during the COP27 climate conference in the field of green hydrogen in Egypt, including 7 memorandum of understanding signed by the General Authority of the Suez Canal Economic Zone with the private sector to expand green hydrogen production and allocate about 2.5 million tonnes of green hydrogen, and the partnership strengthened International Skatak Norwegian company in Egypt to develop and build a 100 megawatt green hydrogen plant. The Minister of International Cooperation stressed the continuation of national efforts under the auspices of the National Green Hydrogen Strategy to support Egypt’s green transformation efforts, combat climate change and expand renewable energy production, indicating the effective contribution of development partners in preparing the National Strategy for Green Hydrogen in cooperation with national authorities. The government had signed a Memorandum of Understanding in March 2022 with the European Bank for Restructuring and Development to assess Egypt’s green hydrogen economy, enhance technical support and develop green hydrogen supply chains in the national economy. Dr. Rania Al-Mashat, Minister of International Cooperation and Governor of Egypt at the World Bank Group, participates in the events of the World Bank and the International Monetary Fund spring meetings, which are held under the slogan “Road to the Future: Building resilience and reshaping development”, with the participation of central bank governors, finance and development ministers, senior private sector officials and representatives of Civil society organizations and academic environments, to discuss issues of global interest.
