The Minister of Communications and Information Technology Amr Talaat and the Minister of State for AI, Digital Economy, and Remote Work Applications in the UAE and Vice-Chair of the World Governments Summit Organization Omar Sultan Al Olama have chaired the roundtable meeting “Towards a Future of Responsible AI” at the World Governments Summit (WGS) 2024.
The session was aimed at shaping a safe digital future and facilitating the exchange of ideas and views that ensure the responsible use of AI applications. Officials from the public and private sectors, academia, and research institutions, and AI experts participated in the discussion.
Topics discussed included rapid technological advancement, AI integration in different industries, the importance of responsible AI governance, and the ethical, social, and economic impact of AI in the public and private sectors. The meeting stressed the importance of establishing effective public-private partnerships to develop responsible AI policies and frameworks, orienting policy- and decision-makers towards responsible AI development, and developing regulatory frameworks to shape a better digital future.
In a similar vein, the ICT Minister held meetings with officials from tech giants to discuss opportunities for cooperation and investment in the Egyptian ICT sector. He met with the Director of Global Public Policy at ByteDanceTikTok’s Chinese parent companyHelena Lersch to explore the company’s business plans in Egypt. The meeting was attended by the Head of Public Policy for the Middle East and Africa at TikTok Farah Toukan.
Talaat also met with officials from MasterCard, led by President of the MENA Division Khalid Elgibali. They discussed the expansion of the company’s Services Hub to serve regional and global markets from Egypt. The meeting also shed light on the upcoming launch of Mastercard Academy and the scholarships offered by the Mastercard Foundation. Discussions also covered the company’s projects in digital government applications and its cooperation prospects.
Furthermore, Talaat met with the President and Founder of Tafaseel Group Maryam Al Nuaimi, and executives from the company to discuss future plans in Egypt. Tafaseel is a leading BPO service provider in the UAE.
Concluding his meetings, the ICT Minister engaged in discussions with the Managing Director for the Middle East and Africa at DXC Technology Hesham Fayed. They reviewed the company’s plans to expand its presence in Egypt and the broader Middle East region.
The meetings were attended by the CEO of the Information Technology Industry Development Agency (ITIDA) Ahmed Elzaher, the Assistant ICT Minister for Strategy and Implementation Sherine El-Guindy, and the Assistant to the ICT Minister for Monitoring Rana Hetta.
It is worth noting that the ICT Minister participated in WGS 2024 in Dubai on February 12-14, as part of a ministerial delegation led by Prime Minister Mostafa Madbouly. He joined several sessions, most notably “How Can Governments Drive Tech Progress while Ensuring Citizen Adoption?” and “Brutally Honest: Are Arab Governments Anywhere Near AI?” as part of the Arab Public Administration Forum.
On the sidelines of WGS 2024, Talaat held meetings with heads of government and officials from private sector companies to foster cooperation in ICT fields.
