In Barcelona, ICT Minister Meets Vodacom Group CEO, Talks Investment with Major ICT Firms

The Minister of Communications and Information Technology Amr Talaat has held talks with officials from various international companies specialized in ICT and electronics, on the sidelines of the Mobile World Congress (MWC) 2024, in Barcelona, Spain. The talks delved into fostering cooperation and attracting investments to the Egyptian ICT sector.

The ICT Minister held a meeting with the CEO of Vodacom Group Shameel Joosub.

Furthermore, he met with the Chairman and Executive Director of ZTE Li Zixue. They addressed cooperation prospects in developing digital infrastructure, promoting digital transformation, leveraging the company’s expertise in 5G infrastructure, and providing innovative solutions to expand coverage of telecom services and Internet in rural and remote areas. The meeting highlighted the company’s operations in the Middle East, Africa, and Egypt and its future plans. The Managing Director and CEO of Telecom Egypt Mohamed Nasr attended the meeting.

Similarly, the ICT Minister and President of Cisco Europe, Middle East, and Africa (EMEA) Oliver Tuszik discussed enhancing cooperation in digital capacity building and the company’s expansion in Egypt. Nasr, Vice President of Cisco Middle East and Africa Reem Asaad, and Senior Vice President of Cisco for International Government Affairs Pastora Valero joined the meeting.

As part of the Ministry of Communications and Information Technology’s (MCIT) efforts to attract electronics companies to Egypt and deepen local manufacturing, Talaat held a meeting with the President of the Semiconductor Solutions Group at Broadcom Charlie Kawwas. They discussed the Egypt Makes Electronics (EME) initiative and explored opportunities for cooperation and investment in this field in Egypt, in coordination with the Information Technology Industry Development Agency (ITIDA).

In a similar vein, the ICT Minister met with the President of Zyxel Communications Karsten Gewecke to discuss cooperation opportunities in telecom equipment manufacturing in Egypt. The meeting was attended by Nasr; Vice President, EMEA CPE SBU at Zyxel Communications Chris Chou; and Head of Sales, Middle East Service Providers Ghassan El-Housseini.

Moreover, Talaat held a meeting with the Deputy Assistant Administrator and Deputy Director of the United Nations Development Programme (UNDP) Regional Bureau for Europe and the CIS Marina Walter. They discussed fostering cooperation to support digital infrastructure development and Egypt’s capabilities in Artificial Intelligence (AI). This is achieved within the Programme’s Digital Transformation Framework, which sets out the most important areas and topics that actors must collaborate on to secure an inclusive digital transformation.

The meeting was attended by UNDP Chief Digital Officer Robert Opp, and UNDP Egypt Assistant Resident Representative and Inclusive Growth and Innovation Team Leader Abeer Shakweer.

The meeting emphasized the activities of the Applied Innovation Center (AIC), which was established by MCIT to develop AI-powered innovative solutions to the challenges facing society in different areas. Cooperation opportunities were addressed to enhance AIC capabilities in implementing projects to develop innovative solutions serving UNDP goals, in line with the 2030 Agenda for Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs). The meeting also delved into capitalizing on successful experiences in this field and promoting international partnerships.

In addition, the two sides examined the efforts made to develop the national and international digital infrastructure and explored boosting collaboration to bolster the state’s efforts in this field on regional and global levels.

The Director of the Central Department of International Relations at MCIT Samah Aziz attended the meetings.

It is worth noting that the ICT Minister visited Barcelona, Spain, to participate in MWC 2024, the world’s largest and most influential event for the connectivity ecosystem. The agenda for the visit included meetings with the Bahraini Minister of Transportation and Telecommunications, the Swedish State Secretary to the Minister for International Development Cooperation and Foreign Trade, and officials from major ICT companies to explore opportunities for cooperation and investment in related fields.
