The Minister of Communications and Information Technology Amr Talaat held, today, extensive discussions with the Tunisian Minister of Communication Technologies Nizar Ben Néji, at the Ministry of Communications and Information Technology (MCIT) headquarters in Smart Village. They discussed enhancing bilateral cooperation in several fields related to digital transformation, digital capacity-building, and Global Information Infrastructure (GII).
The meeting was attended by the Ambassador of Tunisia to Egypt Mohamed Ben Youssef and officials from the two ministries.
The two sides highlighted the developments in the ICT sector in Egypt and Tunisia. They also delved into major projects in the two countries to achieve digital transformation, build digital capabilities, and develop GII and reviewed the most significant proposed areas of cooperation in ICT.
During the meeting, the ICT Minister emphasized that Egypt and Tunisia share strong ties, with the cultural and historical rapprochement between the two nations serving as a main pillar of cooperation in many fields, most notably ICT.
He pointed to various opportunities of cooperation in areas of common interest, including exchanging expertise in digital transformation, and building digital society, in addition to interconnection, cybersecurity, AI, and human development. Other collaboration areas include student exchange programs in technical training and entrepreneurship, and start-up development.
Talaat referred to MCIT efforts in achieving digital transformation, indigenizing data, creating an enabling legislative environment for the ICT industry, and building digital capabilities. He pointed to the Egyptian government’s relocation to the New Administrative Capital, as a participatory paperless government.
For his part, Néji underlined the significance of enhancing cooperation and exchanging successful experiences between Egypt and Tunisia in ICT to serve the two sides. He referred to the most prominent projects implemented by his Ministry. Projects include strengthening international connectivity, developing the telecommunications infrastructure, achieving digital transformation, building digital citizens, and improving the quality of digital services provided to citizens.
The Tunisian Ministry is also developing the National AI Strategy, implementing training and capacity-building projects, fostering entrepreneurship and startups in light of “Startup Program Tunisia,” developing the legislative framework supporting the ICT industry, and fostering international collaboration to learn from different experiences.
Néji added that his country has been focusing on communication and change management to face the challenges impeding digitization. He looked forward to strengthening cooperation between Egypt and Tunisia in digital capacity-building and GII.
The meeting was attended by Assistant ICT Minister for GII Mohamed Nasr Eldin, President of Egypt University of Informatics (EUI) Reem Bahgat, and Chairwoman of the Information Technology Institute (ITI) Heba Saleh.
From the Tunisian side, Advisor to the Minister of Communication Technologies for information Nesrine Hamaici, and Head of Section, Bureau of International Cooperation and Foreign Relations at the Ministry of Communication Technologies Mouna Balti attended the meeting.
