ICT Minister Talks Cooperation, Investment with Broadcom, Ericsson, Huawei, Microsoft Officials at MWC 2024

The Minister of Communications and Information Technology Amr Talaat has met with officials from Broadcom, led by President and CEO Hock Tan. Broadcom is a global semiconductor and infrastructure software solutions leader.

The meeting was held on the sidelines of the Mobile World Congress (MWC) Barcelona 2024. They discussed the company’s plans to expand VMware’s business in Egypt. It is worth mentioning that in November 2023, Broadcom completed its acquisition of VMware, a cloud computing technology company.

During the meeting, the ICT Minister emphasized Egypt’s competitive advantages in the offshoring industry, particularly highlighting its abundant talent pool that provides offshoring services. He underscored the diversity of global service centers established in Egypt by companies to export services to customers across global markets. These centers cover diverse fields, including specialized areas within ICT, with a particular focus on research and development (R&D) as well as electronics design.

Broadcom officials expressed their intention to expand VMware’s operations in Egypt to better serve customers at the regional level. They also commended the effectiveness of Egyptian talent currently employed at VMware in Egypt.

The ICT Minister also met with the Senior Vice President and Head of Market Area, Middle East and Africa at Ericsson Fadi Pharaon. They discussed enhancing cooperation in digital capacity building and offshoring.

At the meeting, representatives from Ericsson showcased the company’s newest solutions and services, along with its vision and business operations in Egypt. They also highlighted Ericsson’s initiatives aimed at developing the skills of young people in ICT, which play a crucial role in driving digital transformation efforts in Egypt and meeting the needs of both Ericsson and international companies in related sectors.

The meeting addressed the opportunities brought forth by 5G technologies and explored avenues for collaboration in devising a long-term roadmap for the post-launch period of 5G. Additionally, discussions focused on cooperation to fulfill the objectives outlined in the Digital Egypt Strategy for Offshoring Industry, leveraging Ericsson’s delivery centers in Egypt, including the AI and Analytics Hub at Creativa Innovation Hub in Sultan Hussein Kamel Palace.

The meeting was attended by the Managing Director and CEO of Telecom Egypt Mohamed Nasr; Vice President and Head of Customer Unit stc, Saudi Arabia and Egypt at Ericsson Middle East and Africa Håkan Cervell; Vice President and Head of Networks at Ericsson Middle East and Africa Chafic Traboulsi; Vice President and Head of Cloud Software and Services at Ericsson Middle East and Africa Lucky La Riccia; Head of Government and Policy Advocacy, Europe Middle East and Africa at Ericsson Robert Condon; Head of Government and Policy Advocacy at Ericson Middle East and Africa Ali Cheema; and Country Manager and Key Account Manager, Egypt Ahmed El Sharkawi.

In a similar vein, Talaat held a meeting with the President of Huawei Cloud Global Marketing and Sales Service Jacqueline Shi. They deliberated on increasing the company’s investments in Egypt and fostering cooperation in AI, 5G, digital capacity building, and ICT infrastructure. The meeting was attended by Nasr; the President of Huawei Northern Africa (North, West, and Central Africa) Terry He; and Huawei Egypt CEO Jim Liu.

Similarly, the ICT Minister met with the Corporate Vice President of Azure for Operators at Microsoft Yousef Khalidi to discuss collaboration in AI training. The meeting was attended by the General Manager, Enterprise, Central and Eastern Europe, Middle East, and Africa at Microsoft Paco Salcedo; and the General Manager at Microsoft Egypt Mirna Arif.

The Director of the Central Department of International Relations at the Ministry of Communications and Information Technology (MCIT) Samah Aziz attended the meetings.

It is worth noting that Talaat is visiting Barcelona to participate in MWC 2024. The agenda for the visit includes meetings with government officials and representatives of major ICT companies and international organizations to explore opportunities for cooperation and investment in related fields.
