The Minister of Communications and Information Technology Amr Talaat has received the Ambassador of South Korea to Egypt Kim Yonghyon. They discussed enhancing cooperation in ICT areas, especially digital transformation, digital capacity-building, Artificial Intelligence (AI), and electronics design and manufacturing.
During the meeting, the ICT Minister said that he looked forward to fostering cooperation between Egypt and South Korea in ICT. He explained the national efforts to achieve digital transformation through various projects, most notably Ahmose, which aims to restructure government operations and applications and digitize government service providers to serve citizens. The ICT Minister also underlined the importance of enhancing bilateral cooperation in digital transformation.
Talaat highlighted that the Ministry of Communications and Information Technology (MCIT) is committed to encouraging the expansion of multinational electronics manufacturers operating in Egypt within the framework of the Egypt Makes Electronics (EME) strategy. He stressed the significance of strengthening bilateral cooperation in this field through meetings between the Information Technology Industry Development Agency (ITIDA) and Korean companies specializing in electronics design and manufacturing, automotive technology, and embedded systems to discuss investment opportunities in these areas in Egypt.
For his part, Yonghyon pointed to South Korea’s leading role in the ICT Industry. He referred to the areas of cooperation between the two countries in ICT, including joint projects implemented by the Korea International Cooperation Agency (KOICA) for digitizing public services. He stated that there are several opportunities for cooperation between Egypt and South Korea in ICT, referring to Egypt’s skill pool and South Korea’s technology and innovation capabilities.
The ICT Minister underscored the importance of academic cooperation between Egypt University of Informatics (EUI) and Korean tech universities.
The Korean Ambassador extended an invitation to the ICT Minister for the ICT Leadership Forum, which will be a part of the first Korea-Africa Summit, scheduled to take place in South Korea in June.
The two sides agreed to sign a Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) in ICT between Egypt and South Korea.
From MCIT, the meeting was attended by the Deputy ICT Minister for Administrative Development, Digital Transformation, and Automation Khaled El Attar; ITIDA CEO Ahmed Elzaher, Assistant Minister for Strategy and Implementation Sherine El-Guindy, and the Advisor to the ICT Minister for International Relations Affairs Khaled Taha.
From the Korean embassy, the meeting was attended by Counselor, Head of Economic Section Sanghun Oh; Commercial Attaché Heondu Yi; KOICA Egypt Director Jinyoung Kim; and Development Cooperation Young Professional Jihye Lee.
