ICT Minister Participates in Roundtable; Meets Officials of Int’l ICT Companies, GSMA Director during MWC

The Minister of Communications and Information Technology Amr Talaat participated, today, in a roundtable, on the sidelines of the Mobile World Congress (MWC) 2023 organized by the Global System for Mobile Communications Association (GSMA), from February 27 to March 2, in Barcelona, Spain.

The International Telecommunication Union (ITU) new appointed management team, along with relevant ICT Ministers from different countries, including Argentina, Brazil, Malaysia, Sweden, Thailand, and Uganda, among others, participated in the roundtable. They discussed the most prominent opportunities, challenges, and requirements for achieving sustainable digital transformation.

In his remarks, the ICT Minister reviewed the most significant ICT priorities in Egypt. These priorities include boosting the ICT sector’s contribution to the state’s Gross Domestic Product (GDP), increasing the volume of digital exports, creating job opportunities for youth, and empowering the Egyptian society to achieve digital transformation to provide digital government services and improve government performance. He also highlighted the efforts made to build the capabilities of young people to qualify them to obtain decent digital job opportunities.

Talaat underlined the efforts made to develop the telecommunications infrastructure, pointing to the Decent Life initiative which aims to improve the living conditions and daily life of Egyptian citizens and render integrated services to 58 million citizens in various fields in 4,500 villages. He revealed that the projects of the Ministry of Communications and Information Technology (MCIT) are aimed at developing the information infrastructure in the villages targeted within the initiative, implementing human development initiatives, building citizens’ capabilities, and supporting digital economic empowerment.

The ICT Minister pointed to the necessity of paying attention to several issues, including children’s online safety and Artificial Intelligence (AI) ethics.

Furthermore, Talaat met with GSMA Director General Mats Granryd. They discussed enhancing joint cooperation during the coming period.

In a similar vein, the ICT Minister also held talks with a group of major ICT companies to discuss enhancing cooperation in related fields. He met with the General Manager of Wireless Communications Business Unit at MediaTek Evan Su. MediaTek is one of the world’s largest global fabless semiconductor companies.

Talaat also met with Group Vice President Integrated Marketing and Communications at STMicroelectronics Gerard Cronin. STMicroelectronics is a global electronics and semiconductor manufacturing company.

Moreover, the ICT Minister met with CEO and Managing Director of Tejas Networks Sanjay Nayak, and Chief Operating Officer of Tejas Arnob Roy. Tejas Networks is a leading Indian company specializing in wired and wireless networks and telecommunications devices and equipment.

Talaat visited the booth of Tejas Networks at MWC to explore the company’s latest techniques and technological solutions.

The ICT Minister also met with Vice President, WW Advisory and Professional Services for Hewlett Packard Enterprise (HPE) Global Sales Sue Preston, HPE Country Manager -Egypt Mohamed Wasfy, and HPE EMEA Director Lee Rand.

Talaat also met with Cisco officials, including President of Cisco EMEA Wendy Mars, Senior Vice President of Government Affairs and Public Policy of Europe, Middle East, Africa and Russia (EMEAR) Pastora Valero, and Vice President for the Middle East and Africa Reem Asaad.

Furthermore, the ICT Minister also visited the booth of GreySkies at MWC where he met with the Founder and CEO of the company Ahmed Gamal, and Chief Operating Officer Ibrahim Ghaleb. Talaat reviewed the digital solutions and services provided by GreySkies to telecom companies.

The meetings were attended by Acting CEO of the Information Technology Industry Development Agency (ITIDA) Ahmed Elzaher, Assistant ICT Minister for Strategy and Implementation Sherine El-Guindy, Assistant ICT Minister for Global Information Infrastructure (GII) Mohamed Nasr Eldin, and Advisor to ICT Minister for Technology Innovation, Electronics Industry and Training Hossam Osman.
