The Minister of Communications and Information Technology Amr Talat has met with the US Deputy National Security Advisor for Cyber and Emerging Technology Anne Neuberger in Washington DC, to discuss ways to enhance Egypt-US cooperation in ICTs.
During the meeting, the ICT Minister underscored the pillars of Digital Egypt strategy, the national efforts to establish a digital economy based on innovation, and the requirements of providing a secure information infrastructure nationwide and adopting emerging technologies. He pointed out that various projects are being implemented with huge investments to develop the local and international information infrastructure, with cybersecurity in attention. The ICT Minister added that measures to secure the ICT infrastructure are being taken to create a safe environment for different state sectors to provide all electronic services, in light of the National Cybersecurity Strategy 2022-2026.
Talaat pointed out that Egypt enjoys many competitive advantages attracting international companies operating in IT, outsourcing, and offshoring services. He pointed to the state’s efforts to create a legislative environment conducive to investment, including enacting the Personal Data Protection Law.
The meeting highlighted mechanisms to foster cooperation in cybersecurity, emerging technologies, and digital capacity-building.
The ICT Minister also held meetings with several congressmen. He met with the member of the House Energy and Commerce Committee and the Chairman of the Subcommittee on Communications and Technology Bob Latta. The meeting presented the most prominent ICT cooperation projects between Egypt and the United States of America (USA) and mechanisms to boost collaboration in all relevant fields.
Talaat also met with the Congressman and Co-Chair of the Congressional Friends of Egypt Caucus Dutch Ruppersberger. They reviewed the developments made in the Egyptian ICT sector, its competitive advantages, and the available investment opportunities, especially in the fields of data centers, outsourcing, and electronics design and manufacturing.
Furthermore, the ICT Minister also met with Congressman Darrell Issa. During the meeting, Talaat emphasized the strong ties between Egypt and the USA. He looked forward to boosting ICT cooperation between the two countries and attracting more investments by American companies to the Egyptian ICT sector.
In a similar vein, the ICT Minister discussed investment opportunities in the Egyptian ICT sector during a roundtable with various officials, members of the U.S. Chamber of Commerce (USCC), from American ICT companies, in the presence of the Executive Director for the US-Egypt Business Council and Vice President of Middle East Affairs at USCC Steve Lutes and the CEO of the American Chamber of Commerce in Egypt (AmCham) Hisham Fahmy.
During the meeting, Talaat emphasized that Egypt is creating an enabling and attractive environment for foreign investment. He pointed to the incentives provided to global ICT companies, and the efforts made to create a talent pool that meets the needs of these companies and enhance its competitive ICT capabilities to keep pace with the global technological advancements.
The ICT Minister explained that the ICT sector has been the fastest-growing state sector for five years in a row due to the implementation of numerous projects aimed at developing the ICT industry, attaining transformation into an integrated digital society, and indigenizing the electronics industry.
For their part, officials from the Egyptian ICT companies attending the meeting hailed the business environment in Egypt.
The meetings were attended by the Egyptian Ambassador to the US in Washington DC Motaz Zahran, the Deputy ICT Minister for Infrastructure Raafat Hindy, the Managing Director and CEO of Telecom Egypt Mohamed Nasr Eldin, the Advisor to the ICT Minister for Electronics Yehea Ismail, and Executive Director of Electronics Industry at the Information Technology Industry Development Agency (ITIDA) Yasser Abdel Bary.
It is worth noting that the meetings came as part of the four-day visit of the ICT Minister to the USA, to discuss enhancing Egypt-US cooperation in ICT and attracting more investments.
