The Minister of Communications and Information Technology Amr Talaat has held a meeting with the Tunisian Minister of Communication Technologies Nizar Ben Neji, on the sidelines of the International Telecommunication Union (ITU) Plenipotentiary Conference 2022 (PP-22), in Romania. They discussed various relevant topics between the two countries and means to enhance cooperation in ICTs.
The meeting was attended by the Egyptian Ambassador to Romania Moayad Eldalie.
The bilateral meeting highlighted the most significant features of the ICT sector in Egypt and Tunisia. Both sides reviewed the experiences of their countries in providing services based on e-signature as well as means to enhance cooperation in the field of e-signature.
The two sides discussed the significant role played by the two countries in acting as a link between the African and Arab groups for the common interest, and working together to achieve ITU common objectives.
The ICT Minister explained Egypt’s interest in building the digital capabilities of youth. He referred to the efforts of the Ministry of Communications and Information Technology (MCIT) in launching several initiatives aimed at preparing digital competencies and helping youth to obtain digital job opportunities.
The Tunisian Minister of Communication Technologies looked forward to visiting Egypt to explore the Egyptian ICT sector developments.
It is worth noting that a Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) was signed between Egypt and Tunisia, during the meeting of the Egyptian-Tunisian Joint Higher Committee hosted by the Tunisian capital last May. It covered several topics, most notably policy and regulations, innovation, entrepreneurship, digital transformation, capacity-building, post, and cooperation between the private sectors in two countries.
The ICT Minister met with Lithuanian Deputy Minister of Transport and Communications Agnė Vaiciukevičiūtė and Lithuanian Vice-Minister of Economy and Innovation Eglė Markevičiūtė. The meeting was attended by the Egyptian Ambassador to Romania.
They discussed means of enhancing cooperation between the two countries in postal services.
The meeting discussed enhancing cooperation between Egypt Post and Lietuvos Paštas, exchanging experiences in digital services provided within post offices, including digital financial services, and promoting cooperation in express mail and parcel services.
During the meeting, Talaat referred to the state’s efforts to achieve digital transformation and develop Egypt Post, which is one of the main pillars in building Digital Egypt.
For her part, Vaiciukevičiūtė expressed her interest in exploring Egypt’s experience in digital transformation and efforts in developing post offices.
Markevičiūtė looked forward to visiting Egypt to provide an opportunity for Lithuanian companies to closely explore the success stories of the Egyptian ICT sector.
It is worth mentioning that Talaat visited Lithuania in August. During his visit, he held meetings with ministers and officials to discuss enhancing cooperation and exchanging experiences between the two countries in digital government as well as ICT and post infrastructure development.
In a similar vein, the ICT Minister met with the Pakistani Federal Minister for IT and Telecommunication Syed Amin UI Haque. The meeting was attended by the Egyptian Ambassador to Romania.
They discussed mechanisms for opening horizons of cooperation between the two countries in ICTs and emphasized the significance of coordination in international issues in relevant areas.
Talaat explained that the ICT sector is witnessing great development, in light of the state’s vision to build Digital Egypt and its keenness to adopt modern technologies to achieve transformation into an all-encompassing digital society.
For his part, Haque reviewed the efforts made by Pakistan to develop the ICT sector. He expressed his interest in the Egyptian experience in this field and called for framing cooperation in ICT through an MoU to be signed later between the two countries.
All meetings discussed supporting the candidates of each country in ITU elections.
The meetings were attended by Assistant ICT Minister for Strategy and Implementation Sherine El-Guindy, Assistant ICT Minister for Global Information Infrastructure (GII) Mohamed Nasr Eldin, and various MCIT officials.
Held every four years, the Plenipotentiary Conference is the highest policy-making body of the ITU. ITU PP-22 is held in Bucharest, Romania, with the participation of ICT ministers, senior officials, and representatives from the Member States.
