The Minister of Communications and Information Technology Amr Talaat has held an extensive meeting with the co-founder and CEO of the Global Semiconductor Alliance (GSA) Jodi Shelton and several GSA members, in California, US.
During the meeting, the pillars of Egypt Makes Electronics (EME) initiative were showcased. EME is aimed at indigenizing the electronics industry and developing the fundamental areas of this promising industry, including semiconductors, embedded systems, and electronics design. The meeting also delved into enhancing cooperation with GSA through GSA Egypt to support and develop the electronics industry in Egypt.
For her part, Shelton praised Egypt’s efforts in the semiconductors industry, highlighting that Egypt enjoys a specialized young talent pool capable of competing in global markets.
It is worth noting that GSA is a leading industrial organization where leaders of the semiconductors industry meet to establish an efficient, sustainable, and profitable semiconductor ecosystem. This expanding ecosystem encompasses semiconductors, software, solutions, systems, and electronics. GSA has an impressive global footprint with 300 corporate members, including 120+ public companies.
In a similar vein, the ICT Minister held bilateral meetings with officials from various companies specializing in the electronics industry. He met with the Chief Supply Chain and Operations Officer at Qualcomm Technologies Roawen Chen; Chief Technology Officer and Senior Vice President, Technology and Product Development at Silicon Labs Daniel Cooley; President of the Semiconductor Solutions Group at Broadcom Charlie Kawwas; and President of Infineon Technologies Americas Corp. Maher Matta.
The meeting emphasized the plans of the Ministry of Communications and Information Technology (MCIT) to develop the outsourcing industry and attract leading international companies to establish centers in Egypt, especially in the field of electronics design and semiconductors.
Talaat invited these companies to visit Egypt to hold further discussions on the investment opportunities available in the Egyptian ICT sector, and closely explore the activities of the Electronics Innovation Center at the Knowledge City in the New Administrative Capital. This is in addition to learning about the training and entrepreneurship activities at Creativa Innovation Hubs, meeting young Egyptian talents, and sharing global visions in relevant fields.
Furthermore, the ICT Minister held an extensive meeting with Egyptian businessmen in the USA, who are specialists and experts in ICT and the electronics industry. They highlighted the most prominent Digital Egypt projects and investment opportunities in the Egyptian ICT sector.
During the meeting, an open discussion took place on the developments in the ICT sector, Egypt’s efforts to develop the IT industry, the indigenization of the electronics industry, and the policies related to stimulating investments in these fields. This is in addition to discussing supporting Egyptian youth: innovators, creators, and startups.
The ICT Minister also met with the Senior VP of Product Development Engineering at Dell Technologies Tibor Fabry-Asztalos and senior officials to discuss boosting investment in the company’s R&D center in Egypt to export services to customers worldwide. Moreover, opportunities to foster cooperation in capacity-building in telecommunications, especially in Open RAN (O-RAN) technology, were explored.
During the meeting, Talaat explained the investment incentives provided to attract foreign investments. For their part, the company’s officials expressed Dell’s readiness to benefit from these incentives, commending the Egyptian ICT talent pool.
The ICT Minister also met with the Executive Vice President and Chief People, Policy and Purpose Officer Francine Katsoudas, and senior officials from Cisco, the worldwide leader in IT and networking. They explored ways to increase the company’s investments in Egypt.
The meeting reviewed the company’s projects and future plans in Egypt. Cisco officials looked forward to enhancing cooperation and presented the company’s plans to expand its IC design business in Egypt and leverage the exceptional Egyptian talent pool in this field.
They referred to Cisco’s plans for establishing a customer experience center in Egypt as well as cooperation projects with MCIT training institutes in digital capacity-building to qualify Egyptian youth for technology jobs, especially in cybersecurity.
Talaat also met with the Chief Customer Officer (CCO) for Tenstorrent Inc. David Bennett. The meeting explored the investment opportunities available in electronics design and manufacturing in Egypt. Tenstorrent is one of the leading companies in AI/ML accelerator, AICloud, and RISC-V processors.
The meeting showcased mechanisms to establish an R&D center in Egypt by providing trained young calibers, an enabling environment for business development, and a robust ICT infrastructure.
The meetings were attended by the Deputy ICT Minister for Infrastructure Raafat Hindy, Managing Director and CEO of Telecom Egypt Mohamed Nasr, Advisor to the ICT Minister for Micro Technology Industries Yehea Ismail, Electronics Industry Program Director at ITIDA Yasser Abdel Bary, and Director of the Central Department of International Relations at MCIT Samah Aziz.
