ICT Minister Inspects MCIT Projects in Qalyubia; Opens Tarsa Post Office

The Minister of Communications and Information Technology Amr Talaat visited Qalyubia today to open and inspect projects of the Ministry of Communications and Information Technology (MCIT). He was joined on his tour by the Governor of Qalyubia Abdel Hamid Al-Hagan.

They inspected the FTTH and broadband projects in the villages of Tahanub and Kafr Shebin, in the presence of the Chair of the ICT Committee at the House of Representatives Ahmed Badawy. The projects are implemented by Telecom Egypt within the framework of the Decent Life initiative.

The ICT Minister and Qalyubia Governor were received by Managing Director and CEO Mohamed Nasr and deputies and executives at Telecom Egypt.

Talaat was given a detailed explanation of the telecom networks and fiber optic cable installation work in the two villages. Fiber optic internet services were delivered to 3,303 clients in Tahanub and 4,010 in Kafr Shebin to ensure higher-quality voice and data services. In Kafr Shebin, the services complex was supplied with a high-speed internet connection, and the post office was digitally transformed. The ICT Minister also inspected the high-speed Internet project in the services complex in Tahanub and the digital transformation of the village’s post office.

Talaat highlighted that developing the technology infrastructure and promoting digital literacy in the villages targeted with Decent Life underpin the efforts of building Digital Egypt. He said he was keen to follow up on the progress achieved in MCIT projects in Decent Life villages. The projects are aimed at improving telecom services, providing high-speed internet, delivering efficient postal services, building digital capacity, and achieving digital economic empowerment for people in the villages. The progress rate of MCIT projects in Decent Life villages in Qalyubia is remarkably high, the ICT Minister noted.

Fiber optic cables were installed in 29 out of 36 Decent Life villages in Qalyubia. Before mid-November, three more villages will have the cables installed, with the remaining four villages to be supplied with fiber optic cables after other utilities are provided.

Other projects included constructing and optimizing 31 out of a target of 40 cellular base stations in Qalyubia. All 20 post offices in the governorate were modernized, with Egypt Post services made available in eight government complexes and through two postal kiosks and a mobile post office available at peak times such as pension disbursement. More than 4,600 citizens in Qalyubia’s rural villages received capacity-building and digital literacy training, as well.

For his part, Al-Hagan underlined that the Decent Life presidential initiative is the biggest national development project in the history of modern Egypt. The project aims first and foremost to improve the quality of life for citizens in underserved communities. With Egypt Vision 2030 in mind, the country has adopted the Decent Life mega project to improve the quality of public services in different sectors to fulfill the political leadership’s vision of ensuring a decent life for citizens, he added.

During the tour, the ICT Minister, Qalyubia Governor, and the Chairperson of Egypt Post Sherif Farouk opened Tersa Post Office in Tukh Center, in the presence of MP Ahmed Badawy. The office was developed and equipped with modern systems and technology tools. Tersa Post Office delivers all types of governmental, postal, and financial services such as pensions, real estate registration, traffic fines, current accounts, domestic and international remittances, mail, parcels, express mail, utility bills (electricity, gas, and water), postal savings, and landline bill.

As part of his tour in Qalyubia, Talaat, along with Al-Hagan and Badawy, visited WE Applied Technology School in Tukh, where the 2023-24 school year is running. The School received applications from more than 200 male and female students from Qalyubia, of whom 67 were accepted after passing Arabic, English, and math assessments, as well as ability tests and personal interviews.

In a similar vein, Talaat, Al-Hagan, and Badawy visited Al Noor School for the Blind and the Intellectual Education School in Ezbet Al Zeraa in Benha. They were received by the Chairman of the National Academy of Information Technology for Persons with Disabilities (NAID) AbdEl-Monem El-Sharkawy and officials from the Ministry of Education and Technical Education in Qalyubia, and NAID. The two schools were developed and supplied by MCIT with technology programs and technical support, including computers, printers, and data show projectors. The aim is to ensure a seamless education experience for students and provide technology training for teachers.

During his tour of the schools, the ICT Minister explored some educational activities for building the students’ capacity through technology applications. Talaat was briefed on the technology needs of schools in Qalyubia. He called for coordination with Telecom Egypt for Internet connection in intellectual education schools and schools for the blind.

The ICT Minister also stressed the significance of supporting students with special needs in Qalyubia and nationwide. This comes as MCIT collaborates with the Ministry of Education to improve the quality of education for persons with disabilities (PwDs). So far, 53 schools in Qalyubia have been supported as part of the project, and nearly 2,000 teachers have received training.

It is worth mentioning that the ICT Minister is visiting Qalyubia today to open and inspect MCIT projects. Talaat is to witness the signing of an MoU on digital institutional development in the general bureau, state agencies, and service directorates in Qalyubia. The ICT Minister will also visit Creativa Innovation Hub, a telemedicine unit, and the Telecom Egypt store in Benha2 telephone exchange.
