The Minister of Communications and Information Technology Amr Talaat met, today, with the Minister for Railways, Communications, Electronics and Information Technology in India Shri Ashwini Vaishnaw, in New Delhi, in the presence of the Ambassador of Egypt to India Wael Hamed. They discussed enhancing cooperation between Egypt and India in ICT fields, most notably digital transformation, the Global Information Infrastructure (GII), and ICT skill development.
During the meeting, the ICT Minister highlighted the strong strategic ties between Egypt and India. He said he looked forward to enhancing cooperation between the two countries in ICT, in light of the availability of a large talent pool in both countries. Talaat shed light on Egypt’s competitive advantages in GII, adding that more than 90% of the data passing between the East and West crosses the Egyptian land territory and waters.
The ICT Minister referred to the efforts made to create an ICT talent pool through numerous initiatives and programs, targeting different age groups. Some of the programs are offered to school students, while others are advanced technological programs provided by Egypt University of Informatics (EUI), he added.
Talaat pointed to the possible cooperation in the field of training and qualification, adding that partnerships can be established between the training institutes affiliated with the Ministry of Communications and Information Technology (MCIT) and IT institutes in India.
For his part, Vaishnaw said he was pleased to foster cooperation in building capacities and developing human competencies in technological fields. He referred to the efforts made through the Indian public and private sectors to develop digital skills, helping upskill nearly 50 million people. He looked forward to organizing workshops for GII service providers in both countries to identify the main aspects of cooperation.
In a similar vein, the two sides discussed proposed areas of cooperation between the two countries in areas of common interest. They addressed cooperation in employing technology in the telecom sector, introducing embedded systems, and exchanging expertise in the field of digital platforms. The meeting highlighted Egypt’s efforts in creating digital platforms within the framework of the national digital transformation plan.
The Indian officials showcased their country’s experience in launching digital platforms in partnership with the private and public sectors and inviting stakeholders to join them. One of those platforms is a digital payment portal. It has been open to banks and SMEs to join, helping promote cashless transactions.
The meeting was attended by Assistant Minister for Strategy and Implementation Sherine El-Guindy, and Assistant Minister for GII Mohamed Nasr Eldin.
It is worth noting that the ICT Minister and his accompanying delegation are visiting India on January 9-13. They will meet with several Indian government officials and CEOs of major ICT companies to discuss enhancing cooperation and attracting Indian investments to the Egyptian market.
