The Minister of Communications and Information Technology Amr Talaat honored the national esports team for winning first place for the second consecutive year in the Afro-Arab eSports League in men’s tournaments in Valorant, held in Riyadh, Saudi Arabia, on August 18-20.
The ceremony was held in Maadi Technology Park, in the presence of the Deputy ICT Minister for Infrastructure Raafat Hindy, the Managing Director and CEO of Telecom Egypt Mohamed Nasr Eldin, several senior officials from Telecom Egypt, and members of the Board of Directors of Telecom Egypt Sports Club.
Ra’ad, an esports team by Telecom Egypt Sports Club, represented Egypt in the Afro-Arab eSports League tournament among eight teams representing several Arab and African countries. The national esports team was crowned champion by winning first place after defeating the UAE national team, which ranked second.
The Kuwaiti team came in third place, followed by the Saudi team in fourth. Kenya, Ghana, Senegal, and Tunisia ranked fifth to eighth, respectively.
During the ceremony, the ICT Minister hailed the achievements of Ra’ad, which was able to achieve, within three years, the targeted vision of establishing the team, namely to be able to represent Egypt in a manner befitting its position as a regional leader in the field of esports. He also congratulated the team members and executive staff on their achievements.
Talaat explained that the e-games industry has become a major industry worldwide. This industry is growing at an annual rate of more than 15-20%, making it a significant part in the ICT areas. Accordingly, an institution concerned with this industry was significant to be established in Egypt, Talaat added.
Talaat pointed out that Telecom Egypt Sports Club is no longer a club for traditional sports and cultural and social activities. It keeps pace with the rapid development in world sports and becomes a hub for e-games in Egypt.
ICT Minister Amr Talaat engaged with the team members to understand their feedback and perspectives on the current esports activities in Egypt. He also pledged to support them in their endeavors to achieve more success in the future.
For his part, Nasr Eldin stated that esports is expanding rapidly worldwide and the achievement of Ra’ad in representing Egypt reflects the national capabilities to keep pace with the rapid development of the global esports industry.
He looked forward to achieving more in the coming years, urging the team members to make more efforts to keep Egypt’s flag flying in regional and global competitions and events.
Furthermore, Nasr Eldin thanked the ICT Minister for his ongoing support for esports to achieve more, as well as the Egyptian Federation for eGames for supporting the esports team regionally and globally, and developing the esports system in Egypt year after year.
