The Minister of Communications and Information Technology Amr Talaat and the Algerian Minister of Post and Telecommunications Karim Bibi Triki held, today, extensive discussions at the headquarters of the Ministry of Communications and Information Technology (MCIT). They discussed enhancing cooperation between Egypt and Algeria in ICT.
The discussions were held in the presence of the Egyptian Assistant Minister of Foreign Affairs for Arab Affairs Alaa Moussa, Ambassador of Algeria to Egypt Hamid Shabira, and Minister Counselor at the Embassy of Algeria in Cairo Noureddine Hadef.
The two ministers held a bilateral meeting to discuss strengthening partnerships and exchanging experiences between Egypt and Algeria in related fields. They also reviewed the most prominent proposed areas of cooperation between the two countries, including telecommunications regulation, cybersecurity, digital transformation, postal services, capacity-building, innovation and entrepreneurship, and establishment of business partnerships.
The two ministers also headed an extensive meeting in the presence of senior officials from Egypt and Algeria. The meeting delved into reviewing Digital Egypt strategy and the strategic projects of the Algerian Ministry of Post and Telecommunications (MPT).
Extensive discussions were also held on means of fostering cooperation and exchanging experiences in several areas related to postal services, digital infrastructure, telecommunications regulation, data centers, IT development, and tech innovation and entrepreneurship support.
During the meeting, the ICT Minister underlined the deep, distinctive, and vast range of bilateral ties between the two countries. He pointed out that MCIT-MPT cooperation varies as they agreed to promote and boost the ICT sector at the forefront of the growing sectors between the two brotherly countries by opening horizons for cooperation in post and information infrastructure. This is in addition to exchanging ideas about success stories in regulating the ICT sector and increasing investments in data centers, and achieving integration between data centers and international communications between the two countries.
Talaat explained that two new submarine cables are to be established to connect Egypt and Algeria by 2025, bringing the total number of cables connecting the two countries to four. He added that the two countries agreed to cooperate in encouraging youth to establish startups, commending the Algerian experience in this field.
Triki stated that Egypt and Algeria have a shared history and future aspirations, especially in the ICT sector. He pointed out that the two countries are interested in supporting youth and investment in modern technologies.
Triki also emphasized the significance of fusing the legacy of institutions providing postal services and modernity using modern technologies. He noted that Egypt and Algeria are constantly coordinating to hold various international forums, including the International Telecommunication Union (ITU), to serve peoples’ interests and ensure using modern technologies.
Triki praised the efforts made to develop the communications infrastructure in Egypt and looked forward that this visit would develop aspects of ICT cooperation, being one of the most prominent pillars of cooperation in communications infrastructure, and innovation and startup support. He also invited the ICT Minister to visit Algeria to complete discussions on cooperation in related fields.
Moussa indicated that Egypt is interested in enhancing cooperation with Algeria and achieving integration in many fields. He highlighted that the Algerian Minister’s visit to Egypt follows high-level visits paid between the Egyptian and Algerian sides. He also looked forward to reaching the visit’s tangible outcomes to serve the interests of the two sides.
For his part, Shabira highlighted that the Algerian Minister’s visit to Egypt is important to foster cooperation between the two countries, being one of the outcomes of the Egyptian-Algerian Higher Committee.
The extensive meeting was attended by the Deputy ICT Minister for Infrastructure Raafat Hindy, the Chairman of Egypt Post Sherif Farouk, the Executive President of the National Telecom Regulatory Authority (NTRA) Hossam El-Gamal, the CEO of the Information Technology Industry Development Agency (ITIDA) Ahmed Elzaher, the Managing Director and CEO of Telecom Egypt Mohamed Nasr Eldin, the Assistant ICT Minister for Strategy and Implementation Sherine El-Guindy, and Advisor for Global Information Infrastructure (GII) at the Ministry of Communications and Information Technology (MCIT) Adel Hamed.
From the Algerian side, the Director General of Algérie Poste Louai Zaïdi, President and CEO of Groupe Télécom Algérie Khaled Zarat, Head of Access Network Department at Télécom Algérie Ali Zardani and Director of Development and Follow-up of ICT Base Facilities at MPT Mohammad Al-Amin Barangia.
In a similar vein, Triki and his accompanying delegation visited Creativa Innovation Hub in Giza to explore the activities of MCIT and its affiliates to provide specialized technical training and support youth technological innovation and entrepreneurship. They also visited the international data center of Telecom Egypt in Smart Village.
It is worth noting that the Algerian Minister is visiting Egypt for two days, heading a delegation of senior officials to discuss enhancing cooperation between Egypt and Algerian in ICT.
