The Egyptian team participating in the International Olympiad in Informatics (IOI) 2022 has won two bronze medals. The Ministry of Communications and Information Technology (MCIT) in cooperation with the Arab Academy for Science, Technology and Maritime Transport (AASTMT) have been organizing the training sessions and the final qualifying rounds to select the members of the team.
IOI has been held in Yogyakarta, Indonesia, on August 7-15. Around 90 countries participated in IOI 2022, which is the first interactive Olympiad in informatics held after the pandemic. IOI was held remotely in the past two years.
For the first time, an Egyptian student developed one of the IOI questions, this year. He has been granted a full scholarship at a top Korean university.
The preparations for IOI 2022 participation started with the conclusion of the Egyptian Olympiad in Informatics (EOI). The best 20 contestants were trained and qualified through bootcamps co-organized by MCIT and AASTMT. Training was delivered by international experts in the informatics field.
Throughout the years, the Egyptian teams bagged numerous medals in previous versions of IOI, taking Egypt’s tally to 25 medals: 19 bronze and six silver. Egypt also received two bronze medals in 2020 and 2021.
Egypt is scheduled to host IOI for the second time in 2024. The first was in 2008.
IOI is the flagship programming and algorithm event targeting school students. Every year, MCIT prepares the Egyptian team participating in the IOI, as part of a cooperation protocol signed with AASTMT for carrying out training activities within the framework of national, regional, and international events in informatics.
