During COP27, the Egyptian Presidency launched the ‘50 by 2050’ initiative, which aims to increase Africa’s solid waste recycling rate from the current 5% to 50% by 2050.

This initiative not only received endorsement from the African Ministerial Conference on Environment and 120 institutions and companies, but the UAE aligned the initiative one of its own, the Waste to Zero Initiative.

At the heart of the UAE Presidency Pavillion in COP28, the 50 by 2050 initiative – represented by Egypt’s Minister of Environment, H.E. Dr. Yasmine Fouad – and the Waste to Zero initiative – represented by Emirati Minister of Climate Change and Environment, H.E. Mariam bint Mohammed Saeed Hareb Almheiri – reaffirmed their commitment to collaboration on both COP-born initiatives, the latter for which is being launched today.

The waste management sector plays a significant role in global greenhouse gas emissions, with waste emissions estimated to represent at least 3% of total emissions. Methane from waste landfilling alone contributes to approximately 20% of global methane emissions. The rapid growth of waste generation and the lack of formalized waste disposal methods pose significant challenges. However, the waste management sector also presents an untapped potential for mitigating greenhouse gas emissions, with the potential to reduce emissions by 1.8 GtCO2-eq per year.

By aligning the 50 by 2050 initiative with Waste to Zero, the goal is to optimise the co-benefits for climate change mitigation and create a sustainable future where waste becomes a resource rather than a burden.
