To support Egypt in its efforts, FAO and UNDP are collaborating with the Ministry of Environment, Ministry of Agriculture and Land Reclamation (MALR) and Ministry of Water and Irrigation (MWRI). Together, we are implementing the Scaling Up Climate Ambition on Land Use and Agriculture through NDCs and NAPs (SCALA) programme.
With support from the Government of Germany’s Federal Ministry for Economic Affairs and Climate Action (BMWK) through the International Climate Initiative (IKI), SCALA works with twelve countries to translate their NDC and NAPs into actionable and transformative climate solutions in land-use and agriculture with multi-stakeholder engagement, emphasizing collaboration between the public and private sectors to drive implementation.
“Climate change is the most devastating crisis of our time,” said Dr Fouad. “Every year, more than 12 million hectares are lost to desertification, the homes of 200 million people will be under sea levels over the next 70 years and 155 million people were pushed into acute food insecurity in 2020 due to extreme weather events. The Government of Egypt with support from the GCF and other stakeholder is setting a national Climate Investment Plan, based on the NCCS, with the aim to accelerate Nationally Determined Contributions, National Adaptation Plans and Long-term Strategies implementation.”
